Bottom Dollar discounts stock at some stores by 50 percent (January 25, 2012)

Several Bottom Dollar stores are slated to close by Feb. 15, including two in Newport News, one in Portsmouth and one in Virginia Beach.

To clear inventory, the closing stores discounted items by 25 percent last week. On Wednesday, remaining items in stock were discounted by 50 percent. Shoppers were enthusiastic.

Several early morning shoppers reported that anxious bargain hunters waited in lines outside of the store, while others waited for a chance to grab a shopping cart.

As of noon, there was still a reasonable supply of dry good items, breakfast items, hygiene products and frozen foods, though bread, milk, produce and meat products were wiped out at the location on Jefferson Avenue near Main Street in Newport News. Shoppers were busy, but friendly.

One cashier commented that the store was closing at 6 p.m., and she expected to be out of a job before Thursday.

Shoppers may continue to use coupons at the stores. Tobacco and alcohol products are excluded from the sale.
