Free tax help through CNU, AARP

Business students at Christopher Newport University in Newport News will prepare and e-file tax returns for free. The accounting majors are certified to prepare taxes through the IRS-sponsored Volunteer Income Tax Assistance Program.

The service is geared toward taxpayers with low to moderate incomes. It begins on Monday, Feb. 6 and will be available various hours on Mondays and Tuesdays through tax season.

The AARP Tax-Aide program begins Wednesday, Feb. 1 at more than 20 locations in Hampton Roads, including the Downing Gross Cultural Arts Center in Newport News and the Williamsburg Regional Library.

The program also is designed for taxpayers with low to moderate incomes.

To participate, you must bring Social Security cards for everyone on the tax return including dependents, a photo ID, all wage statements and tax forms received in the mail, and a copy of last year's tax return if available.
