Savvy Shopper spends $48 at Bottom Dollar closeout sale, saves $57 (January 25, 2012)

It is rather exciting to visit a grocery store that has discounted its entire inventory by 50 percent.

If you have coupons, the trip is even more invigorating.

Sure, serious couponers save 50 percent, or more, every week -- on certain items. But the Bottom Dollar sale at two Newport News locations (as well as in Portsmouth and Virginia Beach), is an easy way for even those who are coupon deficient to score a deal.

You can read about the logistics of the shopping trip, here. (How much was left, how many people were there, etc.).

Here are the best deals I nabbed:

- Honey Bunches of Oats, retail price: $2.88. Saved 50 percent: $1.44. Used $1 off coupon. Total: 44 cents

- Three cans of Campbell's Select Harvest Soup, retail price: $51.6. Saved 50 percent: $2.58. Used $1 off three coupon. Total: $1.58 for three, or 52 cents each.

- Campbell's Spagehettio's, retail price: $5.95 for five. Saved 50 percent: $2.95 (the register took off $3). Used 50 cents off five coupon. Total: $2.45 for five cans, or 49 cents each.

- Hamburger Helper, retail price: $1.58, or $6.32 for four. Saved 50 percent, 79 cents each, or $3.16 for four. Used 80 cents off four coupon. Total: $2.36 for four, or 59 cents each.

- Garnier Fructis Shampoo, retail price: $2.99. Saved 50 percent, $1.49. Used $1 off coupon. Total: 49 cents.

- Garnier Fructis hairspray, retail price: $3.97. Saved 50 percent, $1.98. Used $1 off coupon. Total: 98 cents.

All of the coupons I mentioned above can be accessed at coupons.com.

I did not have a coupon for the Pampers I purchased, but I bought two packs of 54-count diapers for $11.80 each.

In total, I spent $48.50 and saved $57.15. I used six coupons.
