Bottom Dollar hosts closing sale, shoppers empty shelves

Bottom Dollar hosts closing sale, shoppers empty shelves (January 18, 2012)

I decided I would get out from behind my desk on this beautiful January day and take a little journey over to the Bottom Dollar on Jefferson Avenue in Newport News.

It is one of four local stores that will close by Feb. 15. You can read more about that, here.

You can see what I found.

Bread is completely gone, as is yogurt. Meat and produce products are low. The greeting cards section is eerily empty. The toy aisle is skimpy. Various end rack displays are empty with no sign of what was there earlier in the day.

Items typically sought after by couponers, however, are still largely in stock. Colgate toothpaste, for example, is marked at $1, or 75 cents after the 25 percent discount is applied. Coupon clippers can easily get that for free, and, yes, the store is still accepting manufacturers' coupons.

Paper products, canned goods, condiments, cleaning products, dog and cat food and accessories and frozen foods are all still in stock. Search for a coupon, combine it with the 25 percent off sale, and you've got yourself a pretty good deal.

I took a glance at most of the prices, and they seemed to line up with you will find at Walmart. I didn't find anything that was gouged above the normal selling price. That doesn't mean, however, that everything is a great deal. If you're unsure about a price, use the smartphone app, Shop Savvy. The app allows you to scan the barcode of a product and then give you a list of price comparisons at nearby stores.

Keep in mind, the closing stores are no longer honoring Bottom Dollar print advertisements.
